Designer Journal: Convergint, a Global Systems Integrator

A behind-the-scenes interview and reflections on creating Convergint’s technology-rich, interactive workplace.

"Spaces have their own rhythm. When light, texture, and proportion come together, you can feel it. It’s quiet, but it changes the way people experience the day."

Samantha Aleo, NCIDQ, LEED Green Assoc., and Addison Mullins, Architectural Designer III, discuss how they approached the design of Convergint’s new workspace with intention.

Global systems integrator Convergint partnered with DESIGN+BUILD to create an environment that reflects their collaborative spirit and technical precision. The resulting space brings people together through openness, warmth, and a clear sense of purpose.

What inspired the design behind Convergint’s new workspace?

We wanted to create a space that feels grounded yet forward-thinking. Convergint’s culture is built on service and connection, so the design needed to reflect both confidence and care. The natural light was our starting point — understanding how it moved through the space and how people would interact with it throughout the day. Materials like oak, textured stone, and matte black metal brought warmth and balance, allowing the technology around them to feel more approachable. The result is an environment that’s both precise and deeply human.

What were some of the unique considerations for this project?

Convergint’s teams are highly technical, yet very people-driven, so the workplace needed to support both focus and collaboration without feeling divided. Acoustics were a major factor. We used soft finishes, layered materials, and subtle architectural forms to absorb sound while keeping the space open. There was also a focus on visibility — creating clear sightlines across departments to foster transparency and trust.

We thought about how the space could evolve with them too. The furniture systems, lighting, and color palette were chosen to adapt easily as their needs shift over time.

How did the design process unfold?

It was about listening. We spent time understanding how teams work and what makes them proud to walk through the doors each day. The process moved fluidly between analysis and intuition — testing how different textures and proportions could express Convergint’s culture. Every design move had a purpose, whether it was to soften a corridor, frame a view, or draw attention to craftsmanship. The final design feels effortless, but it came from a thousand small, thoughtful decisions.

"At it's best, design makes work feel effortless."

— Addison Mullins, Architectural Designer III.

Where do you see the workplace heading next?

Toward balance. People want spaces that feel adaptable, restorative, and real. Workplaces are becoming more like ecosystems — dynamic, textured, and alive.

Are there any design ideas influencing your work right now?

Authenticity over perfection. Natural materials, light that feels soft and alive, tones that let people breathe. There’s something timeless about spaces that invite touch and carry a sense of calm. When design feels effortless, that’s when it becomes powerful.

What is your favorite DESIGN+BUILD project?

Honestly, Convergint is up there. It challenged us in all the right ways. The mix of technical and human elements pushed our creativity, and seeing how their teams use the space now is incredibly rewarding. But the favorite project is usually the one that’s happening next — there’s always another story to tell.
